Exhibition Opening - Sandroing: Tracing Kastom in Vanuatu

Sandroing (sand drawing) in Vanuatu is a mesmerizing, ephemeral story telling tradition and it is recognized as a UNESCO-designated Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity, since 2003. Developed as a collaboration with the Vanuatu Kaljoral Senta & Nasonal Misium (VKS), this exhibition is the first to focus on Vanuatu’s tradition of sandroing, outside Melanesia. The Exhibition will be on view June 29, 2025 – April 26, 2026. 

1:00 PM - Opening remarks by exhibition curators, Felicia Katz-Harris (MOIFA) and Kaitip Kami (VKS) followed by “Welkam” ceremony 

1:00-4:00 PM - Hands-on activities for all ages including traditional fan-making with Evelyne Bulegih Wobelak and sandroing with Julia Toto and Edgar Hinge 

1:30 and 3:30 PM Traditional dance performances by ni-Vanuatu dancers from Penama Province 

2:00 – 4:00 PM Light refreshments
