Exhibition Opening - Appearances Deceive: Embroideries by Policarpio Valencia

June 8, 2025
1:00 PM - 4:00 PM

Please join us in celebrating the opening of Appearances Deceive: Embroideries by Policarpio Valencia. Born in Santo Niño, New Mexico in 1853, Policarpio Valencia lived his life as a farmer, salt trader, mill operator, mayordomo and Justice of the Peace in Rio Arriba County. In his later years, Valencia began repurposing used household textiles and clothing, adorning them with intricate embroidery and messages written in the Spanish of northern New Mexico.

Appearances Deceive is the first retrospective of Policarpio Valencia’s work. Each embroidered piece contemplates the serious subjects of mortality, and spirituality with wit and whimsy.

The opening event will feature two performances by musician Dr. Gregorio Gonzáles (Comanche and genízaro). Catering will be provided by the Women’s Board of the Museum of New Mexico.

1:30 – 2:00 pm First Musical Performance by Dr. Gregorio Gonzáles (Auditorium)

2:00 – 4:00 pm Women’s Board Reception (Atrium)

3:00 – 3:30 pm Second Musical Performance by Dr. Gregorio Gonzáles (Auditorium)

Vanessa Zamora Vazquez is a Chicana Visual Artist and Colchera.  Focusing on incorporating her traditional aspects and bringing them out into her contemporary pieces. Vanessa’s great grandmother also made embroidery which she says holds a special place in her heart. Vanessa explains that being able to express yourself and show it to the world is such a special thing, especially when it comes to her work. "Sometimes my art can get a little weird, but I know there are plenty of weirdos out there that feel the same way I do." Holding her hands to her heart she points out that art comes  from the heart, and that is where she sends every piece out to the world from.
